From Reef to Rigger: This is My Place! with Alison Lester

Some of our Year 5 students with Alison Lester

It was with great excitement that our school welcomed Australian Children’s Laureate, Alison Lester, on Thursday, 1st August. Year Three, Four and Five classes participated in a session during which Alison discussed her work, sharing her early attempts at writing and illustrating, which she described as ‘horrible’, and impressing upon them the importance of practising and practising to improve.  As this is part of our mantra at Tannum it was great to see it being reinforced by such a successful author and illustrator.

A highlight of Alison’s visit was the workshop in which 30 lucky students participated. Learning sketching techniques and experimenting with water colours before creating some spectacular paintings based on the theme “My Place” was a tremendous experience for all students.

Ten Year Five students also represented our school at the Are We There Yet? Exhibition launch at Gladstone Regional Art Gallery and Museum on Friday 2nd August. They viewed the exhibition and excitedly identified the post cards created by Tannum students that were on display in the gallery. We were all very proud of Blaike Perkins who spoke on behalf of all participating Gladstone students during the launch. Mayor Sellers, Alison Lester and Dr Robyn Sheahan-Bright congratulated our students on their exemplary behaviour.

The Are We There Yet? exhibition which contains work by many Tannum students will be displayed at the Gladstone Regional Art Gallery and Museum until Saturday 17th August.
